Project Summary:
Located in the lilting mountains around Dullstroom, South Africa, this house was intended to both stand proud of the surrounding context while also responding to the the strict constraints imposed by it, the most notable of which is the slope that ranges from 20 to 35 degrees across the site.
In addition to the slope, the breath-taking views, site access constraints and estate requirements, all resulted in a contemporary farm-style residence that allows the user to both feel connected to the context while also providing a feeling of luxury and escapism, which the clients desired.

This residence also posed a number of challenges that needed to be taken into consideration such as temperature fluctuations, site access and adverse soil conditions. The latter or which, for example, resulted in the basement needing to be redesigned to accommodate varying site conditions.

In order to deal with constraints around site access, a relatively nuanced approach was taken, where steel elements were used strategically in order to minimise adverse consequences.
This also offered the opportunity to develop a number of custom details in order to deliver what the client wanted, while using materials that are readily available in the Dullstroom area
